In a bid to protect Australians against fraud, the Australian Government outlined serious responsibilities for "record keepers" in the 1988 Privacy Act that held them accountable to accredited paper-shredding, document-destruction and paper-recycling measures.
Principle 4 of the Privacy Act mandates that record-keepers must protect records "against loss; against unauthorised access, use, modification or disclosure; and against other misuse".
